Do you love your voice? Do you love the holistic benefits of harmonizing with others?
This workshop is for you.
Do you feel self conscious about your voice? Are you curious to spend time with your voice in a new way? This workshop is for you.
Do you feel both grief and joy about our current relationship to the earth? Do you feel inspired being a human connecting to the earth? This workshop is for you.
Do you feel disconnected somehow from the earth? Do you feel that landscapes such as NYC are keeping you at a distance from your relationship to the earth? This workshop is for you.
Dive into the joyful praxis* of song study and voice work! Participants will be able to relax in ceremony with other voices, and be guided gently through meditation and vocal exercises. This workshop features a sound and chanting intro with River, a brief talk/discussion on topics of the earth element, and then guided meditation leading into group song.
Participants wanting to join in further with the sound are invited to bring small percussions such as egg shaker, maraca, singing bowl, kalimba, mbira, jaw harp etc.
River hopes that workshop participants will walk away from the workshop with a renewed sense of nourishment, connection to our home planet, and a song that you can keep with you! Songs and singing to oneself can be used as a coping skill and self regulation in difficult times, or as a light-amplifier in times of joy and gratitude.
*Definition of praxis: a reflective approach to action that involves moving between practice and theory, informed by traditions in a field, and built on a commitment to recognizing the social, political, and environmental implications of said approach.

Riverstone
River (they/them) is an advocate for environmental education, former wilderness professional, contemporary spiritual student, and voice worker. They hold an LMSW and a selection of mental health and safety certifications, and they have been a practitioner of meditation (and student of Buddhism) for over a decade. River grew up camping, worked professionally guiding in the outdoors for three years, and trekked 500 miles of the Appalachian Trail on a 3-month excursion in 2017. Prepping and executing long-ish excursions for camping and meditation next to nature is an important part of River’s life and mental health. Most recently, River slept under the stars every night on a 6-week retreat in 2023 which included silent meditation, gardening, and song ceremonies around the deep remote coastal forests of Northern California. Under supervision of a spiritual teacher, River studies voice healing and dream yoga with Bobinsana, the heart-opening lucid dreamer master plant. River hopes for all voices that they may somehow be liberated by singing a single note; may the utterance of one vowel be like diving into the boundless joyous ocean. If you are interested in getting involved with environmental justice, River volunteers with the activism group Extinction Rebellion NYC!
