what to expect:

We are on a fairly remote stretch of the Oaxacan Coast of Mexico. It’s wild, powerful, and beautiful, which is why we love it here.  Visiting the Oaxacan coast is a unique opportunity to be immersed in nature. Maha Rose South at El Triángulo seeks to create an elegant experience while still being in touch and in balance with the ecosystem. If you are drawn to the long sunsets and bright blue skies, we also want to prepare you for the parts of living in a small Mexican town that may be less familiar.

Property:

The nearest airport is an hour away while the nearest Starbucks is three hours away.  That gives you a sense of where we are. But don’t worry, there is way better coffee here!

  • We are a seven minute walk from the main road in town.  The second half of the walk is up a fairly steep hill. It is a great workout.

  • The beach is another seven minute walk from the main road.

  • We are on the edge of the town, and walking back at night requires a flashlight.

Ecology:

El Triángulo is designed to be as low impact on the environment as possible.

  • The rooms have fans but no air conditioning.

  • Water is precious here, for that reason we are using dry composting toilets. One composting toilet can save approximately 6600 gallons of water a year.

Nature, services, and resources:

  • The sun here is very strong.  Hats and/or sunblock are highly recommended if in the sun between 9am-4pm for more than twenty minutes

  • All spaces use fans to circulate air. The only space with air-conditioning is the recording studio, to protect the equipment.

  • There are many insects around, including scorpions and spiders, mosquitos (can carry dengue fever), ants , etc..  We take steps to reduce and relocate each of these. Please use repellent, especially in the early morning and dinner hours.

  • Mobile phone service and power is generally pretty solid, but there are outages from time to time.  We are equipped with a generator and Starlink Internet (satellite) when all else fails.

  • It’s not uncommon for the local ATMs to run out of money.  It’s best to change or pull out money in the Mexico City airport. This will offer you the best exchange rate. If there is no money at the ATMs in Mazunte, the next nearest banks are in the town of Pochutla (thirty min drive) Puerto Escondido, or Huatulco (one hour drive)

  • Credit cards are not readily accepted here. It is highly recommended to exchange money at the airport in Mexico City.

  • No one uses Venmo, Paypal, or Applepay here.

Where is Mazunte and what are the closest airports?

~ Mazunte is located on the Oaxaca coast, in between Puerto Escondido (PXM) and Huatulco (HUX). From either airport it is a one hour taxi drive to Mazunte.

Where is El Triángulo?

~ El Triángulo is nestled behind the town of Mazunte up a healthy hill. We are a fifteen minute walk from the beach up a hill. Guests must feel comfortable walking up a hill or they may rent a four wheeler or scooter to go up and down the hill.

Is transportation to and from the airport included?

You are responsible for your airfare and taxi fee to and from the airport. For Maha Rose retreats we will coordinate your pickup and drop off to and from the airport.

Do you offer retreat center rentals?

Yes! Please email us if you are interested in bringing your team or project to Maha Rose South and el triángulo.

Getting to Mazunte: Please tell us when you will be arriving: flight arrival date, time and airline. For all Maha Rose retreats, we will arrange for a taxi to pick you up from the airport and bring you back to El Triángulo. The cost is around 1000 pesos. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so if multiple people are arriving at the same time you may share the car. Tip is included.

For Maha Rose retreats we will also arrange for your return car from the retreat center back to the airport. The cost is around 1000 pesos.

Your destination is El Triángulo, in Mazunte.  If you have a travel plan your phone will work at the airport and once you get to Mazunte, but not in between on the highway. It’s about an hour drive from Huatulco and and hour and fifteen minutes from Puerto Escondido. Please see the map below.

You must exchange cash before leaving the airport in Mexico City, or before leaving your own country. The ATM here is often out of money. There is an ATM at the Huatulco airport but it is in the departures area. You can go there through the outside of the airport and it is a short walk, less than four minutes.

Please be sure your passport has at least six months before it expires:

“Most countries will not permit a traveler to enter their country unless the passport is set to expire at least six months after the final day of travel. That means if your passport has less than six months remaining until the expiration date, you should renew it right away.” - Fastpassport.com

Arrival Time: Room check-in is at 3pm and the first activity will be an opening dinner and circle at 7pm.

Departure: The final activity of your retreat will be held on the last day. Breakfast and a closing circle. Most retreats finish by noon.

Early Arrivals & Extended Stays: We recommend coming a few days early and staying beyond the retreat if you are able.  Please reach out if you would like to book extra nights before or after your retreat with us.

There are many other charming Airbnbs, hotels, and hostels in Mazunte and the surrounding areas.

What to Bring:

  • Clothing: come prepared for hot tropical weather

  • Sandals/flip flops & good shoes for walking, water shoes optional.

  • Sunglasses & hats for shade

  • Bathing suit & beach towel

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Bug repellent: this is the tropics, mosquitos are fierce and mosquito-born illnesses: Chikengunya, Zika and Dengue are a reality. We like bug spray or cream with Picaridin. The meals will be mostly vegetarian with gluten-free and vegan options. We use local and seasonal ingredients. If you have any food allergies or restrictions, please let us know as soon as possible for planning.

Notes about Traveling:

San Agustinillo and Mazunte are neighboring villages with very friendly communities, however you are in a foreign country. Please keep valuables to a minimum and always lock them up in your rooms.

We provide purified water for you to fill your water bottle with. When you are out, note that all ice is made of purified water and when at restaurants drink bottled water only.

The Pacific Ocean is fantastic, as well as wild. Be careful when venturing into the ocean and it is best practice to swim with a friend. Some of the surrounding areas have very strong currents, if you are warned of this, please listen! Safety first.

Do not swim at Playa Mermejita. It is too dangerous.
